What Is CBG And How Is It Different From CBD?

By now, you are more than familiar with CBD and all of its healing benefits. From anti-inflammatory properties to helping ease back pain, we all thought CBD was the answer to our prayers.  But there’s another cannabis compound that’s quickly becoming popular and it’s called CBG.

CBG Meaning

CBG stands for cannabigerol and is currently being studies for its health benefits. The cannabis plant is thousands of years old, but common knowledge of it is still very new.

We are still learning about all the cannabinoids in the marijuana plant.

What does CBG do?

“We don’t know much about this cannabinoid,” says Perry Solomon, M.D., a board-certified anesthesiologist and medical cannabis expert. “It’s not a common cannabinoid.”

“This cannabinoid is the precursor to CBD, CBC, and THC,” says Dr. Solomon. It’s sometimes referred to as the stem cell. What does this mean? “CBGA (the acidic, inactive form of CBG) changes, is broken down, and becomes the base molecule that other cannabinoids form from,” including THC, CBD, and CBC.

CBG and CBD are considered non-psychotropic, so they won’t alter your state of mind in a way that would inhibit your day-to-day function and mental clarity like THC can. However, they may alter your mind in a way that could potentially relieve anxiety and depression.

What are the benefits of CBG?

While the cannabinoid is still being studied, here are some benefits that early studies have tapped into:

  • Increased appetite
  • May treat glaucoma
  • Antibacterieal Properties
  • Could help inflammatory bowel disease and colitis
  • Potentially fights cancer
  • Showing major promise for inflammation, including of the skin

CBG Vs. CBD

CBG helps make CBD, but they are completely different cannabinoids. They serve different purposes and may help treat different ailments.

All of the cannabinoids present in cannabis are derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). For example, THC, CBD, and CBG. CBGA is the acidic form of CBG and as the cannabis plant matures, it is converted into a ratio of the three major cannabis precursors, THCA, CBDA, and CBCA.

The CBGA that’s left over and not converted, is formed into CBG through decarboxylation.

Due to this timely process, most strains contain very little CBGA, often below 1% by weight.

Unlike CBD, CBGA works mostly through direct interactions with the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors in the brain.
