What Is Kratom? Is It Safe?

Scientists say kratom may hold the key to treating chronic pain and may be a key tool in combating addiction to opioid medications. Advocates say the herb offers relief from pain, depression, and anxiety. But what exactly is kratom and why haven’t we heard of it before?

Where does Kratom come from?

Kratom is a tree that grows naturally in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Its leaves have traditionally been used as medicine, and now it is becoming more popular in the Western world.

Traditionally, Kratom leaves were chewed, brewed into tea, or used in cooking. Today it’s ground up in pills, or crushed and smoked like marijuana or tobacco.

In Asia, many people ingest it in small doses as a way to boost energy and mood, similar to how people in the Western world drink coffee. In larger amounts, those in Asia use it for recreational use, like beer and wine are in the West.

What does Kratom do?

Kratom begins to take effect within 5-15 minutes after being ingested and can last for 2-5 hours after taking it. This herb has different effects at different doses. In lower doses, it  acts as  a stimulant that makes you feel more energetic and has been known to increase sociability and alertness. In higher doses, it can make you sleepy or put you in a dreamlike state and may help reduce anxiety, relax the body, lower pain sensations, and sedate the user.

So where do these effects come from? It contains a chemical called mitragynine, which is an alkaloid that acts on the brain opiate receptors and alters mood.
